Best Mobile Apps for Worship Leaders

We have a lot of apps for worship leaders here, so I have put the apps into several categories so you can peruse the ones you are most interested in as well as to help in navigating the list. The links should make that clear to you.

Text It Later – Android https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iamcaptaincode.textLater&hl=en

When you are a worship leader, communicating with your team with reminders is sometimes necessary. Email may not be sufficient for reminders, such as changes in rehearsals or songs. How about sending a prayer to someone or word of thanks at a time best for them to read it? The big social networking sites sometimes lose our message, so the important ones might be better sent as a text.

Text Later is the simple solution to sending SMS messages at a later date. Need to send a reminder about a meeting? Or maybe you are a little forgetful about sending out Happy Birthday messages to friends and family. Text Later allows you to send out SMS messages to contacts, at any date or time of your choosing. Make sure you have a texting plan through your carrier, as Text Later sends standard SMS messages and you are responsible for any charges from your carrier regarding the sending of SMS messages.

MUSICIAN TOOLS

Of course, our largest section here is about tools for music. Worship leaders, we are musical leaders. Whether we need to prep individually or need tools to aid in rehearsals, these apps should fit your requirements. While we lead spiritually, our vehicle of music cannot be neglected. The following apps for worship leaders will fine-tune your service.

tunable
Tunable – Tuner, Metronome, and Recorder
– iOS https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tunable-tuner-metronome-recorder/id608540795 // Android https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.affinityblue.tunable&hl=en

We learn best when we can have feedback. It’s much like how our voice sounds strange to us when we hear it recorded and played back. When you have a tempo or visual cue to give you reference, your growth as a musician is enhanced. Tunable offers ear-training practice for the worship leader.

Learn to play in tune with sustained pitch history. Visualize how steadily you play or sing. As notes are held out, a white line draws how steady the pitch is. The straighter the line, the more consistent the pitch.

Improve your ear with tone and chord generator. Need a reference tone or chord? Use the tone and chord generator to play and sustain chords with various tone options. Choose from different temperaments to hear how they compare.

Keep tempo with an accurate and simple metronome. See the pulse with a visual metronome. View subdivision and current beat, with a large display and (optional) visual flash.

Record and share. Record your practice and performances. Add reverb for a professional sound. Share recordings through e-mail, SoundCloud, Dropbox and more.

Music Memos – iOS https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/music-memos/id1036437162

Get your songwriting ideas down, then take them further with this easy-to-use app for worship leaders. While the chord reading and tempo features work moderately well, the archiving and sharing features of this app are valuable for a songwriting worship leader or when you want to arrange an actual song and make it your own.

Music Memos is the easiest way for songwriters to capture and organize new musical ideas. Use your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to record acoustic guitar, piano, voice, or any musical instrument as high-quality, uncompressed audio. Then name, tag and rate your ideas to start building a library of all your favorite new song parts and riffs. Music Memos automatically detects your tempo, rhythmic feel and chords and lets you instantly hear your musical idea accompanied by a rhythm section with realistic drums and bass. View the chords you’ve played, add comments and lyrics, or share your recordings with friends or directly to Apple Music Connect*. And it’s easy to take your favorite ideas into GarageBand to add more instruments and continue building your song.

Reverse Phonic Rhymes – Android https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nl.android.reversephonicrhymes

I used to carry around a rhyming dictionary, but now we have apps like Reverse Phonic Rhymes. Choose near rhymes or perfect rhymes in the application settings and enjoy a full word database of at least 250,000 rhymes that are included in the app.

So you have been trying to find words that sound the same but you are having a hard time doing so? Well don’t scratch your head, use Phonic Rhymes instead. So don’t waste your time, use this app to find your rhymes! (I used this app to write this…) Phonic Rhymes will give you rhymes and near rhymes based on the pronunciation of your search word. The are over 250,000 words in the Phonic Rhymes Database so you know we’ve got your bases covered. With Phonic Rhymes you can even set how close you want the Rhymes to be!

polytune
PolyTune
– iOS https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/polytune/id364009203

You can’t write or perform music with an out-of-tune guitar! This tuner listens to all six guitar strings at once, making tuning quick and accurate. As a worship leader, there will be times when you do not have access to a pedal or your snap-on tuner, so a solid tuner is vital.

It’s the most powerful tool you’ve ever had in your pants! You know … for tuning. That said, this is one of those nuggets on the App store you cannot afford to miss if you value being in tune and you take your smartphone with you when you go places. Yes to both? Then it’s a no-brainer!

  • Tune all strings at once! Just strum your guitar, and see the pitch of all strings instantly.
  • Guitar/bass mode
  • Drop-tunings
  • 1:1 port of the award-winning PolyTune pedal (Guitar Player, Guitar World, Premier Guitar, MIPA, NAMM Best in Show 2010, etc.)

There are many other tuning apps for worship leaders, but this one is highly recommended from our source.

Cleartune – Chromatic Tuner – iOS https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cleartune-chromatic-tuner/id286799607 // Android https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bitcount.cleartune&hl=en

This highly-rated app is not only great for guitars but other stringed instruments, whether a banjo or a violin. Even that rare worship service you need a Baroque tuning temperament is handled by this app. The microphone on the phone is used for your acoustic guitar, but if you have a guitar adapter such as an iRig, it would be great to use when you need a quick tuning.

Cleartune is a chromatic instrument tuner and pitch pipe that allows you to quickly and accurately tune your instrument using the built-in mic in your iPhone or using an external mic on your 2nd or 3rd generation iPod Touch.

Cleartune features a unique “note wheel” interface allowing you to quickly find your pitch, paired with a highly responsive fine-tuning meter for the perfect tune.

With support for custom temperaments, transposition, notations such as solfège, adjustable calibration and more, Cleartune packs more power than most pro tuners, yet is simple enough for everyone to use.

PRODUCTION & TECH

How we execute the worship service leadership often involves tech. The following apps help with measuring volume, playing tracks live, and keeping your music on time. With sermons, worship music, and announcements, it sounds like a good idea to keep those who share the platform from hogging all the time. You don’t need a fancy computer program and screens to keep on time as this app allows your smartphone to keep you on schedule.

This app does one thing but it does it extremely well. If you give presentations, training, tutorials, or speak publicly, this app is for you. Beautifully animated, with large, easy to read numbers that change colors at thresholds you determine. When the timer hits 0:00, the colors invert (black on red) and continue counting up indicating how long you’ve gone over. Fully customizable options and simple touch controls

  • Create and save as many timers as you want from 0min to 99 min 59 sec
  • Set time limits for color warnings to change the clock to green, yellow and red
  • Timers can be configured to give audible and/or vibration alerts when crossing a time limit threshold — but if you want a completely silent countdown, that’s ok too.

It is common for a modern worship band to use in-ear monitors which give the opportunity to use a click track. From his phone, your drummer can trigger the entire set list you create with tempos and timing for each song on your set. Even if you simply use this for worship band rehearsal, you can grow your team’s sense of groove and timing.

Tempo is the premier mobile metronome app. It is used daily by performing artists for their gigs, teachers in their lessons, students for their practices and even golfers and bodybuilders in their training.

Tempo gives you the features you need without sacrificing usability. Its engine is written from the ground up for high accuracy and stability. Over that is wrapped an attractive and comprehensive single-screen interface. Flashing LEDs also serve as buttons to customize beats, enabling the creation of complex rhythms. Save your configurations as songs in set lists and share them with friends, including those using iOS devices.

If you need a metronome for personal practice as well as for your worship team rehearsals, here is one worship leaders use. Custom ways to hear the click the way you want makes a difference! Personal practice and preparation is also an important part of leading worship, and Pro Metronome allows a “rhythm training” mode where it mutes certain beats, so you can tell how on-track or off-track you are. A training setting is invaluable for personal growth for any musician, not just drummers.

Pro Metronome is all about customization – change beat sounds, accents, and even choose from 4 different beat volume levels (“f”, “mf”, “p” and “mute.”) With the Pro Version, access subdivisions, polyrhythm settings, and create complex patterns with triplets, dotted notes, and non-standard time signatures.

The app supports several ways to experience beats. All versions have sound, but upgrading to Pro enables Visual, Flash and Vibrate. Visual and Vibrate Modes are great when you’re playing loud instruments or when you need to FEEL the beat. Flash Mode uses the device’s camera flash to help your whole band sync up easily.
