Proverbs 20:7

The lovers of God will walk in integrity, and their children are fortunate to have godly parents as their examples. – Proverbs 20:7 (The Passion Translation)

I like the Merriam-Webster dictionary definition of integrity which states, “The quality or state of being complete or undivided.” Scripture teaches that the double-minded man is unstable in all his ways (James 1:8). Conversely, the man who is single-minded and confident in the promises of God has clarity of thought and great stability. Being obedient to “one master” (Matthew 6:24) rather than serving two—or three—displays to children the concept of loyalty and obedience. True leadership is having the integrity to practice what you preach and do what you say you will do.

Proverbs 4:1-2

Listen to my correction, my sons, for I speak to you as your father. Let discernment enter your heart and you will grow wise with the understanding I impart. My revelation-truth is a gift to you, so remain faithful to my instruction. – Proverbs 4:1-2 (The Passion Translation)

Proverbs 22:6

Dedicate your children to God and point them in the way that they should go, and the values they’ve learned from you will be with them for life. – Proverbs 22:6 (The Passion Translation)

Being a strong supporter of your child’s formal and informal learning takes a lot of energy and time, but it comes with great reward. Your perspective and God-given insight is important to the overall physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of your child; and no matter how involved you are, good or bad, you will have great impact.

Matthew 7:9-11

“Do you know of any parent who would give his hungry child, who asked for food, a plate of rocks instead? Or when asked for a piece of fish, what parent would offer his child a snake instead? If you, imperfect as you are, know how to lovingly take care of your children and give them what’s best, how much more ready is your heavenly Father to give wonderful gifts to those who ask him?” – Matthew 7:9-11 (The Passion Translation)

Here is yet another parallel between fathers here on earth and our Father in heaven. It is difficult for a child to begin to understand the heart of the heavenly Father without the example of their earthly father. So much is riding on your ability to reflect the Father’s love. “Every experience of the love and blessing of a home on earth can be a ladder by which to rise up and get nearer to the great Father-heart in heaven.” (Murray, Andrew How to Raise Your Children for Christ. Whitaker House, 1997. Print.).

Proverbs 3:11-12

My child, when the Lord God speaks to you, never take his words lightly, and never be upset when he corrects you. For the Father’s discipline comes only from his passionate love and pleasure for you. Even when it seems like his correction is harsh, it’s still better than any father on earth gives to his child. – Proverbs 3:11-12 (The Passion Translation)

2 Timothy 3:15-17

Remember what you were taught from your childhood from the Holy Scrolls which can impart to you wisdom to experience everlasting life through the faith of Jesus, the Anointed One! Every Scripture has been written by the Holy Spirit, the breath of God. It will empower you by its instruction and correction, giving you the strength to take the right direction and lead you deeper into the path of godliness. Then you will be God’s servant, fully mature and perfectly prepared to fulfill any assignment God gives you. – 2 Timothy 3:15-17 (The Passion Translation)

Discipline is never fun to administer or receive, but when done patiently, lovingly and consistently, it yields good fruit (Hebrews 12:11). If you love your child, you will discipline your child (Proverbs 13:34); but discipline is only effective when you have first laid the foundation of a loving relationship and shared the bonds of affection, encouragement and joy. First, delight in your children, then be willing to correct them with the eye for conforming them to the image of Christ.

Proverbs 14:26

Confidence and strength flood the hearts of the lovers of God who live in awe of him, and their devotion provides their children with a place of shelter and security. – Proverbs 14:26 (The Passion Translation)

A healthy respect for God is a form of protection. The fear of God is the beginning of all wisdom and it will take foresight and wisdom to create a safe environment from the snares and hazards of the enemy. A child is safest with a man who loves and fears God.

Psalm 103:13

The same way a loving father feels toward his children—that’s but a sample of your tender feelings toward us, your beloved children, who live in awe of you. – Psalm 103:13 (The Passion Translation)

Girls that are adored and loved are more likely to develop healthy and positive relationships in adulthood. Boys who are loved are taught how to love and to perpetuate strength that is controlled and careful. Like a shepherd, a father cares for his flock – feeding, protecting, leading, being available and having a watchful eye.

Proverbs 17:6

Grandparents have the crowning glory of life: grandchildren! And it’s only proper for children to take pride in their parents. – Proverbs 17:6 (The Passion Translation)

3 John 1:4

It is the greatest joy of my life to hear that my children are consistently living their lives in the ways of truth! – 3 John 1:4 (The Passion Translation)

Decisions made today will affect the future of your child, even if they are made shortsightedly. They will bring you pain or bring you glory. The purpose of parenting is to leave a biblical legacy. Deuteronomy 6:6-9 talks about the legacy of God’s law by exhorting you to first commit wholeheartedly to the commandments of God, then repeat them again and again to your children. You as a father have a distinct and important role in the lives and futures of your little ones.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Wisdom can make anyone into a mighty warrior, and revelation-knowledge increases strength. Wise strategy is necessary to wage war, and with many astute advisers you’ll see the path to victory more clearly. – Proverbs 24:5-6 (The Passion Translation)

Ephesians 6:10-13

Now my beloved ones, I have saved these most important truths for last: Be supernaturally infused with strength through your life-union with the Lord Jesus. Stand victorious with the force of his explosive power flowing in and through you. Put on God’s complete set of armor provided for us, so that you will be protected as you fight against the evil strategies of the accuser! Your hand-to-hand combat is not with human beings, but with the highest principalities and authorities operating in rebellion under the heavenly realms. For they are a powerful class of demon-gods and evil spirits that hold this dark world in bondage. Because of this, you must wear all the armor that God provides so you’re protected as you confront the slanderer, for you are destined for all things and will rise victorious. – Ephesians 6:10-13 (The Passion Translation)

1 Timothy 4:8

For athletic training only benefits you for a short season, but righteousness brings lasting benefit in everything; for righteousness contains the promise of life, for time and eternity. – 1 Timothy 4:8 (The Passion Translation)

But we have been approved by God to be those who preach the gospel. So our motivation to preach is not pleasing people but pleasing God, who thoroughly examines our hearts. – 1 Thessalonians 2:4 (The Passion Translation)

1 Corinthians 15:58

So now, beloved ones, stand firm and secure. Live your lives with an unshakable confidence. We know that we prosper and excel in every season by serving the Lord, because we are assured that our union with the Lord makes our labor productive with fruit that endures. – 1 Corinthians 15:58 (The Passion Translation)
