For many Americans the Thanksgiving season calls to mind images of a Norman Rockwell style gathering, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, “Miracle on 34th Street,” spending time with relatives and friends, feasting on turkey, and taking a tryptophan-induced nap while watching college and pro football. All these traditions are wonderful and should be enjoyed, but what is the holiday really about, and who is the object of our thankfulness?

“O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.” (Psalm 95:1-3 KJV).

10 Worship Songs for Your Thanksgiving Service

As we celebrate Thanksgiving let’s keep in mind all the ways God has blessed us. Here is a list (in no particular order) of contemporary worship songs that can help us express our thankfulness to God in our quiet time or while worshiping a more corporate setting.

1. Forever – Chris Tomlin

The goodness of God provokes thanksgiving and our greatest joy! Psalm 136 recounts God’s unfailing love to His people and the phrase “His love endures forever” is repeated throughout. Inspired by this Psalm, writer and worship leader, Chris Tomlin wrote the song “Forever”, which not only has a catchy tune but is rich in content. Your congregation will get excited singing about all the Lord has done.

“Give thanks to the Lord, our God and King,
His love endures forever.
For He is good, He is above all things.
His love endures forever.
Sing praise, sing praise.”

2. Thank You – Ben Fielding and Reuben Morgan

This popular tune was penned by two members of the group Hillsong, an Australian band known internationally for its praise and worship music (maybe you remember the ever popular song “Shout To The Lord”). “Thank you” is a song of adoration to Jesus for all He has given us. It reminds us of God’s kindness, His mercy, and unending grace.

“Thank You for Your promise, thank You for Your favor,
Thank You for Your love, everything You’ve done for me
To Your Name we give all the glory”

3. Your Grace – Andy Park

Grace is the unmerited favor. Although we do not deserve it, God has lavishly blessed us by pouring out grace and mercy upon us. Singing the song “Your Grace” is a wonderful way to express thankfulness to our gracious Father. This rolling, mid-tempo song never specifically mentions thanksgiving, but it certainly helps cultivate a grateful heart!

“Your amazing grace is perfectly free
Day by day Your grace, empowering me
To please You in all things
To walk in Your ways
Completely forgiven
And it’s all by Your grace”

4. Thank You For Saving Me – Delirious

The British band Delirious has a lot of Christian rock songs to their credit and they can certainly pack a stadium full of fans, but they are also known for their many modern worship songs. Their ballad, “Thank You For Saving Me,” is a perfect song choice for a Thanksgiving theme.

“Mercy and grace are mine, forgiven is my sin.
Jesus my only hope, the Savior of the world.
‘Great is the Lord’ we cry, God let your kingdom come.
Your word has let me see. Thank you for saving me!”

5. Once Again – Matt Redman

In response to God’s love, we come boldly to the throne of grace and pour out our lives in worship to the Lord. “Once Again” is an intimate song of humility and gratitude for the amazing truth that the God of the universe would call us His friends. It is written by English songwriter/worship leader Matt Redman.

“And once again I look upon the cross where You died.
I’m humbled by Your mercy and I’m broken inside.
Once again I thank You, once again I pour out my life.
Thank You for the cross, thank you for the cross, my friend”

6. Jesus, Thank You – Pat Sczebel

This beautiful song, from Canadian Worship leader Pat Sczebel, recounts Christ’s work of reconciliation and celebrates the change brought about in our lives because of it. We all have gone astray and were once enemies of God, but while we were still sinners, Christ died for us! Because of His grace and mercy displayed at the cross, we are now friends with God. God has made us co-heirs with Christ! We have a lot to be thankful for!

“Once Your enemy, now seated at your table. Jesus, thank you”

7. Here I Am To Worship – Chris Tomlin

This intimate worship song celebrates the Lord’s faithfulness with unashamed thankfulness. The beautifully crafted lyric by Chris Tomlin says it all!

“Here I am to worship, here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that you are God.
You’re altogether lovely, altogether worthy,
altogether wonderful to me.
And I’ll never know how much it cost,
to see to see my sin upon that cross.”

8. Haven’t You Been Good – Steve Earl

God saved us and He continues to rain down blessing upon blessing. His goodness motivates us to praise Him.

“Favor on my life
Always watching over me
My darkness turned to light
And Heaven’s arms enfolding me
Haven’t You been good? Haven’t You been so good?”

9. Blessed Be Your Name – Matt Redman

Another Matt Redman selection, “Blessed Be Your Name”, challenges the worshipper to proclaim the reality of God’s faithfulness, whether in seasons of great blessing or seasons of hardship.

“Every blessing You pour out I’ll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say Blessed be the name of the Lord!”

10. Give Thanks With A Grateful Heart – Henry Smith

This classic praise song from the mid-80s has a simple yet timeless message. Song-writer Henry Smith grew up playing secular rock and living for himself, but God got a hold of his heart and dramatically saved him. His faith grew strong, but unfortunately, his eyes grew weak. Henry eventually lost his sight because of a degenerative eye disease, but he never charged God and was always thankful. He wrote “Give Thanks” as an expression of his eternal gratefulness to God for the gift of salvation.

“Give thanks with a grateful heart.
Give Thanks to the Holy One.
Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His son.
And now, let the weak say ‘I am strong!’ Let the poor say ‘I am rich!’
Because of what the Lord has done for us. Give thanks.”
