The symbol of the peace symbol is actually one of crucifixion. Saint Peter was persecuted and condemned to death during the reign of the Roman Emperor Nero in the 2nd century A.D. Rather than be crucified in the same manner as Jesus Christ, the Apostle asked to be crucified upside-down. His wish was granted: the lines in the middle of the peace symbol represent a man crucified upside-down with outstretched arms.
