Many people who call themselves Christians easily find themselves in the routine of attending church on\u00a0(some)\u00a0Sundays, maybe a small group, and\u00a0perhaps even serving on a ministry team. And in this\u00a0pattern, they begin wondering if there is more to their relationship with God than just showing up on the weekend.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What if\u00a0spending time in close relationship with Jesus and other people\u00a0actually helps\u00a0to encourage a deeper walk with Him?\u00a0Jesus commands His disciples in Matthew 28 to \u201cgo and make disciples.\u201d\u00a0He says,\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/i>All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The early church began because Jesus discipled the 12, then they went and discipled others. Soon, thousands were following\u00a0Christ and believing the gospel.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So how do we walk in obedience to Jesus\u2019 command to make disciples?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Be with Jesus to become like Jesus.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In order to be one who disciples, we must first become a disciple.\u00a0That means spending time with Jesus. Being committed to reading, meditating, and memorizing the Word of God.\u00a0Carving out time in prayer. And\u00a0denying\u00a0ourselves\u00a0to live for Him. \u201cIf anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me\u201d (Luke 9:23).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And as we are with the Lord, being sanctified into His likeness, bring others into that. The disciples\u00a0spent time with Jesus. They walked with Him, ate with Him, journeyed with Him. As you do\u00a0all of\u00a0these things with Him, too, invite others to join you in that.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Do what Jesus did.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One pastor that has greatly influenced my life says, \u201cIf you want to do what Jesus did, you have to do what Jesus did.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many times, we strive to see and do the miraculous things Jesus displayed.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Or we desire to show grace and mercy and love to those around us.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Or we crave a life of peace.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet we aren\u2019t willing to\u00a0take the time to do what He did: spend time alone with the Father.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe went up on a mountainside by Himself to pray\u201d (Matt. 14:23). Whenever Jesus\u00a0did ministry (and His ministry was incredible!),\u00a0<\/span>He took moments to get away<\/span><\/a>\u00a0from the crowds to be alone with His Father.\u00a0If we want to see God move in our lives so that others experience Him, we also need to get alone and spend time with the Lord.\u00a0It is in\u00a0these private moments we are filled up so we can then go out and do His Kingdom work.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Abide in His Word.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As we mentioned before, spending time with God is one of the best ways to become more like Him, and thus be able to love like He loves.\u00a0One way to do this is to abide in His\u00a0word.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus\u00a0actually says\u00a0that we are His disciples\u00a0<\/span>if\u00a0we abide in His word<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0The mark of a disciple is one who is continually\u00a0staying in His word. How can we\u00a0truly know God and share Him with others if we don\u2019t know what His word says?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Love One Another.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Along with making disciples, another commandment Christ gave was to love one another. He says,\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/i>A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another\u201d\u00a0(John 13:34-35). So not only are we considered His disciples if we abide in His word, but\u00a0<\/span>others<\/span><\/i>\u00a0will know that we are His disciples by how well we love each other.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Make Disciples Who Make Disciples.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus\u2019 disciples learned from Him, then they went and made more disciples. From there, the church grew because the disciples\u00a0continued\u00a0this cycle of\u00a0teaching and growing. In the modern Church, discipleship seems to have taken a back seat to large services\u00a0where, yes, the word of God is taught, but true discipleship isn\u2019t happening.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A simple way to do this is to find a few people, invite them into your walk with God, and then, after a time, encourage them to find their own people and do the same. Soon,\u00a0from what started as a few people will grow into thousands of others not only becoming disciples but making disciples.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
