Church charter teams are there to help improve their systems and process and work on improvement efforts. Successful teams are driven by directives of the organization and are steered by a Team Charter.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.highperformanceteams.org\">highperformanceteams.org<\/a>, a team charter statement is \u201ca written document that defines the team\u2019s mission, scope of operation, objectives, time frame and consequences.\u201d<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spending the time to develop a team charter and purpose statement can help ensure team support and resource availability. \u00a0A charter helps clarify support and resource allocation from management. This formal document legitimizes the team\u2019s efforts and supports the team so they can accomplish what they are charged to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>A Team Charter document should include:<\/b><\/h4>\n<h5><b><i>Purpose Statement<\/i><\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The purpose statement explains why a team exists and how its charge lines up with the global goals\u00a0of the organization. \u00a0For example, \u201cThe purpose of the customer experience council is to improve customer satisfaction scores for Regional Community Church\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b><i>Mission Statement<\/i><\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A mission statement clarifies the team\u2019s responsibility. \u00a0For example, \u201cThe mission of the Budget Review Council is to ensure proper management and control of church financial resources.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b><i>Scope of Operation<\/i><\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scope of operation details the boundaries and parameters that the team operates within. \u00a0For example, \u201cThe Human Resource Council will research and make recommendations on hiring, firing, compensation and benefits for church employees according to best practice benchmarks and within legal and tax compliance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b><i>Team Objectives<\/i><\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The objectives of a team should be tied to measurable results. \u00a0These objectives should be able to demonstrate the effectiveness of the team. \u00a0For example, \u201cThe Budget Review Council will control church expenditures and maintain a 5% profit margin.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b><i>Time-frame<\/i><\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The time-frame for any team project should be clearly defined so the team understands the deadlines and urgency for completing their commission. \u00a0For example, \u201cThe Facility Review Council will ensure all church facilities are maintained with appropriate updates on an annual basis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b><i>Consequences<\/i><\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chartered teams use organization resources and the team should be held accountable for producing the results outlined in the team charter. \u00a0There should be very specific accountability outlined in the document so members understand the importance of their commitment to the Council. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important for newly chartered Councils to understand why the group exists, what they are charged to do, the time-frame by which they need to accomplish the tasks as well as accountability for meeting team objectives. \u00a0This very clear communication and process on the front end of a team launch can help prevent miscommunication issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Committed members have an interest in helping the church achieve its mission. \u00a0Church councils are an avenue that the church can draw on the experience and expertise of its members to help strategize, implement and maintain church systems, processes and resources. \u00a0This collective effort by church members helps to facilitate a process that keeps the church focused on those things that are critical to achieving its mission.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15503 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sharefaith.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/headshot-8.png\" alt=\"headshot-8\" width=\"175\" height=\"208\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/+PatriciaLotich\/posts\"><em>Patricia Lotich<\/em><\/a><em> is the founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/smartchurchmanagement.com\/safeguard-against-church-embezzlement\/\">Smart Church Management<\/a>, a site devoted to providing free articles, tools and resources for those managing a church operation.
