Why Must Wives Submit To Their Husbands

The Christian Principle of Submission Ensures that God Leads the Way

"For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts." (Isaiah 55:9)

Submission to God is a safe and sound choice for every believer, acknowledging His perfection and trustworthiness. God is above all. He is the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth. However, many Christians may not understand the true meaning of submission, believing that it carries negative meaning. Some versions render the word submit as 'understand and support, obey or follow the lead.' This does not hold a negative connotation, as if someone is oppressed and has no other choice but to obey. Submission does not mean weakness or helplessness. Rather, it is a deliberate decision of obedience motivated by love, not only for God but for other believers.

Submission may seem similar to surrender, but there are important differences. Surrender, in the Christian viewpoint, has more emphasis on ceasing to resist God, and relinquishing or yielding one's life to God and acknowledging His superiority (See Surrender). Submission, on the other hand, has more emphasis on resolutely coming under the mission of God. It means to deliberately and appropriately assign one's self under Godly authority and direction, having concluded that His way is best.

Submission is a word often used when speaking of a Christian wife who purposely places herself under the leadership of her Christian husband. Whereas society may think that submission is just for wives, the Bible teaches that all believers are to submit themselves to each other, to be submissive to their spiritual leadership, and to be in submission to civil laws and regulations. Depending on the circumstance, every one at different times must be submissive to another.

The opposite of submission is rebellion. But this kind of resistance or defiance because of pride is fruitless. In the Old Testament, the people of Israel were called stiff-necked and hardhearted, and forfeited the Promised Land and many blessings because of unbelief. However, First Peter 5:6-7 says, "Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you." Submission to God accompanied by obedience to Him leads to abundance of His blessings.

The best place to begin learning about genuine submission is the Bible, God's revealed Word. It expresses the heart, will and intentions of the living God. His words are true and faithful. His work is perfect and His way is perfect. He is trustworthy, and worthy of the believer's submission. Jesus said that Scripture cannot be broken. But people break themselves on God's Word, trying to prove that it is erroneous, no longer relevant, and that it is just an old religious book of human writings. But no human can honestly allege to have perfect words, works and ways, only God.

In contrast, the Bible reveals that all humans are liars and have sinned, and have fallen short of the glory of God. Every person needs a Godly instruction manual to live successfully. Because God's ways and thoughts are perfect, every believer should learn His thoughts by learning His Word, and submit to His ways. In so doing, they will experience and realize fulfillment as the person God created them to be.
