In response to His disciple's plea, Jesus outlined the perfect pattern for prayer - Prayer that begins with worship of Who God is and continues to magnify Him and His various attributes throughout:
- Our Father in heaven
To call Him Father is to acknowledge Him as the Creator, the giver of life (Genesis 2:7)
- Hallowed be Your Name
To hallow (render sacred or to regard as holy) His Name, is to worship Him.
- Your kingdom come
To ask for His kingdom come is to recognize Him as King (Revelations 15:3)
- Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven
To exchange human will for His is to reverence Him as Yaweh, Adonai, Lord (Psalm 110:1).
- Give us day by day our daily bread
To ask Him to meet our needs to is acknowledge Him as Jehovah Jireh, Provider (Genesis 22:1-14).
- And forgive us our sins
To accept His forgiveness, is to accept Him as the Lamb of God, Savior (John 1:36).
- For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us
To forgive others is to offer a sacrifice of obedience to the Father of Compassion (2 Corinthians 1:3).
- And do not lead us into temptation
To ask for His leading is to acknowledge Him as Jehovah Rohi, Shepherd (Psalm 23).
- But deliver us from the evil one
To acknowledge Him as deliverer is to honor Him as El-Shaddai,the all powerful (Genesis 17:1; Romans 11:26)
To pray well is to worship God. To pray effectively elicits His positive response (James 5:16). Scripture outlines various forms of effective prayer:
- Corporate Prayer
"If two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them" (Matthew 18:19-20 NKJV).
- Individual Prayer
"But when you pray, go into your [most] private room, and, closing the door, pray to your Father" (Matthew 6:6 Amplified).
