In my last article, I solicited the opinions of worship leaders of large and small congregations to find out the ways they thought time and money were being wasted. In this post, I was asked to write about what we, as sound techs do when the PA system fails in part or in whole. So guess what? I asked a group of my favorite techs to hear their sound tech best practices. Perhaps you’re doing some of these things already (aren’t you so smart?) and maybe you’re not (there’s always something we can learn). In any case, here are some very practical and helpful sound tech best practices we all can learn from. (more…)
I know it’s hard to admit, but you know and I know we could be spending our time and money in much better ways than we do. When asked to write on this subject I didn’t want to confess the ways in which I waste time and resources. No way! I would rather observe how others waste their time and report my findings to you. So I contacted a few of my closest worship leader friends to hear what they thought of the subject. Some of them you may know like Bob Kauflin (Author of Worship Matters), Benji Cowart (Award-winning Songwriter, Worship Pastor and Teacher), Ben Gowell (Producer, Songwriter, Guitarist for Paul Baloche and Worship Pastor), and Jonathan Lee (Award-winning songwriter and Worship Pastor). Others may be less familiar to you but they are dedicated guys whom I admire and respect and who serve in their local churches: Matt Kees, Jeff Harrison, JD Farina, Michael Sainz, Joe Mikey Papa and Randy McCoy. I thought I would share their insights to see if it strikes a chord in you. I know they did with me and have encouraged me to make changes in the way I utilize my time and resources not only in ministry, but also in life. (more…)
What is a revival? Growing up in the southern United States, I can remember revival meetings that lasted at least a week. Every night you’d attend church and hear a traveling minister preach powerfully the Word of God and invite attendees to receive the good news of Jesus for the first time, or to come forward and recommit your life to the ways of faith. It’s this reawakening (and the residual effects on society) that creates what historians interpret onto history as a period of revival. What sparks great American revivals? The short answer is the Holy Spirit. The more complicated answer includes cultural shifts, local and global events, and the willingness of individuals to embrace faithful leadership. Here are five great American revivals, citing the who, what, when, where and how. (more…)
The joy and challenge of Scripture is that all of it is “God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,” says Timothy (2 Tim. 3:16), but you might not know that Timothy became the leader of the church in Ephesus by the request of Paul. And, Ephesus is likely the last place that Mary, Jesus’ mother, lived. We put together some of these kinds of tidbits in the following list of “Bible Things You Never Knew”. We hope it’s both refreshing and inspiring. (more…)
We’ve all heard ‘Dad Jokes’ before. What are ‘Dad Jokes’? Think about the funniest joke you’ve heard recently, it’s not anything like that. The nature of a ‘Dad Joke’ is to make you laugh in a different way, in a way that completely relies on how hard your dad is laughing at the joke. Yes, these jokes are dry. They are ‘puns’. What’s a pun? The dictionary defines a ‘pun’ as a joke that exploits the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words that sound alike, but have different meanings. Here you go, dads, a healthy supply of ‘Dad Jokes’ that will drive your family crazy. Families, let’s encourage our dads this year by laughing harder than them at their prized ‘Dad Jokes’. We promise this will mean more to them than a fancy tie or cuff links. (more…)
Having the mindset to encourage your child is immensely important for their spiritual growth. Discouragement is an unwelcome storm cloud that darkens life. It drains the fun out of things we enjoy, causes us to pull away from those we love, and robs us of our passion for truly living. Sadly, discouragement is not exclusive to adults. Our children can find themselves walking under this dark cloud. However, as parents, you can eliminate discouragements – you can encourage your child today!
In Proverbs 16:24 (NLT), the Bible teaches us: “kind words are like honey – sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.” Speaking words of encouragement to our children literally brings them health, for both body and soul. Now that’s an amazing promise! If your little one has been slumping under the gloom of discouragement, then it’s time to flood their heart with some light. (more…)
